Cowbirds lay one egg in the nest of a bird of another, slightly smaller, species. The cowbird hatches first, and grows faster than the host chicks, reaching higher than its nest-mates and getting the lion's share of the food offered by the host parents. Sometimes the cowbird chick will push the smaller, weakened host chicks out of the nest. A brilliant, if slightly horrifying, survival strategy.
